The T&T men’s team secured the silver medal while its women’s compatriot got the bronze medal on Sunday as the curtains came down on the Rugby Americas North (RAN) Sevens Tournament which was hosted by the T&T Rugby Football Union at the Larry Gomes Stadium in Malabar, Arima.

The men’s team, coached by Larry Mendez, expectedly went down to a more experienced Canadian outfit in the final 38-0 which was their only blemish on an otherwise perfect day on the field.

After a second-day performance on Saturday sent them straight into yesterday’s quarterfinal round, the host delivered an effortless 29-0 triumph over regional rival Barbados to cruise into the semifinals where they were joined by another regional powerhouse Jamaica, and Canada whose regular outings on the international circuit had placed them in a class of their own this weekend.

However, the local men earned a berth in the title match by beating Mexico 19-7, for the right to face the Canadians who expectedly made light work out of the Jamaicans 26-0.

In the final, experience proved to be the difference as a raging Canadian attack led to tries on regular occasions.

Meanwhile, the T&T women’s team gave a much-improved performance than the day before, first having to batter its compatriots, the T&T ‘B’ Team, 42-2 in their opening match for the right to contest the play-off for third and fourth against the Dominican Republic.

In that encounter, the T&T women took charge early and didn’t let up until the final whistle, demolishing their counterpart 29-0 for the overall third-place finish.

However, the country’s ‘B’ Team rebounded from their early loss by clobbering Barbados 22-5 in a fifth and sixth-place play-off.
