Makaelan Woods and Jeniah Tobias led a number of athletes who scored multiple wins at the annual Magic Mist Central Zonal Games held on Thursday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port-of-Spain.
Woods of Richmond Street Boys Anglican won gold in the 100 metres, 200m and 400m in the Under-13 Boys age-group in the Central A zone to be named the victor ludorum with 15 points as well as Tobias of Sacred Heart Girl’s RC, scored the same number of points and earned the award in the Central A zone for the U-13 girls after reaching the top of the podium in the same three events.
Coincidentally, the feat was also achieved by four other athletes including Central A U-11 victrix ludorum Alafia Charles of Newtown Girls RC. Eden Chee-Wah of Sacred Heart Girl’s RC was on target with 15 points while Central A U-15 Boys champion Micha Billingy of Rosary Boys RC and Nathaniela King of St Ursula’s also achieved that success in the U-15 Girls championship in Central A.
Chairman of the Sports Organising Committee Games Lyle Reece thanked sponsor Magic Mist Services Limited, who has given its support over the past five years.
Magic Mist vice president Wayne Herbert brought greetings on behalf of his company and expressed the need to give back.
He said, "As an organisation, we understand the importance of giving back to the communities within which we serve many of which fall within the Port-of-Spain Central school district. As such we sincerely believe it is our responsibility to harness and develop the potential of these young students - they are our future leaders."
Mucurapo Boys of Central B definitely led in the zone's march past as they were adjudged the best on parade with 274 points. Gaines Normal AME was second with 264 and Mucurapo Girls RC was third with 257.
Sacred Heart RC (266) continued its dominance of the Central A march past with a hard-fought success over St Catherine’s Girls Anglican (265). Rosary Boys made it four straight championships wins in four years and six in seven years when they won convincingly.
These outstanding athletes will go for glory on April 24 when they match up against the leading athletes from the various zones at the Rotary Games to be held at the same venue.
