T&T pulled off an incredible 40-run win over Guyana after being bowled out for just 69 in the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Under-19 Rising Stars Women’s T20 Championship on Monday.
The great comeback occurred at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, San Fernando. The host country won the toss and decided to bat in the must-win match.
T&T, who has batted well in the competition thus far, were bowled out for 69. Openers Shunelle Sawh and Shalini Samaroo both failed to get off the mark.
Sawh was the first wicket to fall after being bowled by Cyanna Retemiah for no runs. Senior player Djenaba Joseph entered and joined captain Samaroo at the crease, hoping to build a partnership but that was not to be. Samaroo was next bowled by Trisha Hardat for a duck with only six runs on the scoreboard.
Joseph did not last long either after facing 14 balls she too was bowled by Hardat for seven.
Samara Ramnath, the eventual “Player of the Match” and Aniaya Roberts tried to repair the innings but they too had their wickets broken. Ramnath was bowled by Hardat for 12 and Roberts by Ashmini Munisar for 11.
Kenika Cassar, the only other player scoring in double-figures, top-scored with 13 before she was caught by Niveena Ramnauth for 13. The remaining batters combined for just six runs as T&T was left to defend a meagre 69.
In reply, Guyana had no answers for T&T bowlers as they crumbled all out for 29. No batter reached double figures as T&T’s skipper Samaroo led the bowling with three wickets for seven runs while Ramnath (2-5) and Kiara Ruben (2-3) picked up two wickets each. In her lone over, KD Jazz Mitchell claimed 1-7.
