Number one seed in the Girls Under-18 division of the RBC Junior Tennis Tournament Charlotte Ready earned an easy bye into the quarterfinal round at the Trinidad Country Club in Maraval on Monday, along with Jordane Dookie, but today may not be as simple.
An in-form Ready could be up against either Gabby Mackenzie or Ayasha Smith when action resumes, while second seed Dookie could face the match of her life, up against Jaeda-Lee Daniel-Joseph. Third-seeded Cameron Wong also progressed from the round of 16 via a bye, but now she will have to put her skills to play if she is to get past Jada Des Vignes.
Meanwhile, fourth-seed Ella Carrington, who also benefitted from a round-of-16 bye, will come up against Zara Ghuran.
The Boys u-18 equivalent saw a similar pattern with the top four seeded players- Ebolum N'wokolo, Ethan Wong, Sebastian Sylvester and Charles Devaux all getting byes into the quarterfinals.
However, in the Girls under-14 division, Shalina Smith upset the Lease Operators champion Eva Pasea 7-5, 6-2 for the right to enter the semifinals. There she meets Gabriella Prince, who prevailed over Arya Siewrattan in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 while number one and two seeds Christiana Hills (1) and Brianna Harricharan (2) both progressed via a bye, but will be encounter equally challenging matches against Smith and Prince respectively today.
In the Boys, u-12 Yeshowah Campbell-Smith cruised into the semifinal after beating Gabriel Denoon in two sets 5-4(1), 4-1 for a perfect start for the top seed player.
Meanwhile, number two seed Lucas Small made an early exit to the tournament when he went down to Daniel Rahaman in an almost flawless victory 4-0, 4-1.
Rahaman has now booked a date with Brian Harricharan, who came from behind to get the better of Malcolm Prince 2-4, 4-1, 10-5.
Smith on the other hand could have his hands full when he faces Aaron Subero, a 4-2, 4-2 winner over Adam Wyatt in the quarters.
Meanwhile, in the Boys U-10 Singles, another Rahaman, Darius Rahaman secured a semifinal berth by beating Zellig Williams 4-2, 5-4(4).
Alex Sharma also cruised into the semis at the expense of Sebastian Plimmer 4-2, 4-1, while the top two seeds- Josiah Hills (1) and Jack Brown (2) eased into the semifinals via byes.
