T&T Cycling Federation president Rowena Williams has pedalled her way to another major achievement in the world of cycling.
In only her third incarnation as head of T&T cycling, Williams on Wednesday revealed via a release to the media, that she had earned the right to be among the voting delegation at the UCI Congress, scheduled to take place in September.
Her election via a recent COPACI Congress (Pan American Cycling Confederation) made her one of only two women from the region to earn the rights to vote at the UCI Congress. The other woman delegate is Monique Leerdman of Aruba.
In explaining her journey to becoming a representative at the UCI Congress, Williams said: "Recently the COPACI Congress was held in March and at the congress, they had initially amended the constitution to include women as part of the delegation to go into the UCI Congress meeting, where each regional body and the COPACI, being the Pan American body, would be required to have delegates appointed to represent the region in any decision-making process or decision-making item that may come up at the congress.
So the COPACI region, where we're a part of, would have had their elections this year, and at that election, they would have appointed voting delegates that would be appointed to the part of the delegates going into the UCI Congress in September. At that meeting, they would have required at least 25 per cent of the voting delegation to be women, and at the meeting in March, they did not have the required number.
They then had to have another election process to nominate another woman to be part of the delegation going into the UCI Congress, where I was one of the nominated persons, getting most of the votes for the region.
So I would now make up the two women required to be part of the delegation for the UCI Congress."
Back at home, Williams who is a member of a renowned cycling family, has called for the implementation of a COVID-19 plan that would enable the sport to have constant action during the pandemic.
