T&T’s cycling team of Ryan D’Abreau, Njisane Phillip, and Nicholas Paul earned T&T a gold medal in the Team Sprint on the opening day of the Pan American Elite Track Cycling Championships which pedaled off in Paraguay Wednesday night.
It was the first medal for the T&T, who produced the fastest time in the team sprint on the night.
Riding in the order of D’Abreau, Phillip, and Paul, the men in the red, white, and black strips produced the fastest time in the heats, posting a quick 43.394 to get the better of Brazil in heat three. The Brazilians clocked 46.241 which turned out to be the slowest time among the heats and earned their exit immediately.
Also progressing from the heats were Mexico who held off South American Argentina with a 44.161 finish in the first heat and Canada who brushed aside the United States for the win in heat two.
The T&T trio then took on Colombia in the gold medal ride and prevailed in a time of 43.428, which, although it was slower than their ride in the heats, proved to be enough to get across the finish line before the Colombians.
T&T’s, female team-sprint team did not make it to the starting line after a rider allegedly pulled out of the team. It is understood that the pair of Phoebe Sandy and Teniel Campbell was ready to race when a third member of the team decided not to take part.
