Trinidad and Tobago’s four-man men's 3x3 basketball contingent, comprising Tyrik Zwade Singh, Jason Josiah Friday, Tyrese Fields, and Jelani Micah Valley, staged a heroic effort on Thursday to top Qualifying Draw C at the FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup in El Salvador.
Despite facing severe adversity, the national squad navigated a chaotic round-robin series to secure a hard-fought berth in the main draw.
Under the guidance of coach Christopher Jackson Charles, T&T started their opening qualification match against Saint Lucia with supreme confidence. The team commanded a comfortable 7-2 lead with 7:06 remaining on the game clock, relying on fluid ball movement and sharp offensive execution. However, disaster struck mid-match when Friday took a devastating elbow to the face during a physical battle under the rim, resulting in the loss of three teeth. Rattled by the gruesome injury and forced to play without rotation players, a short-handed T&T squad struggled to maintain their initial rhythm, eventually surrendering the lead and dropping a tight 17–14 decision.
While Friday was rushed off the court to receive emergency medical intervention, Singh, Fields, and Valley regrouped for the second match against the Cayman Islands. Showing immense grit and composure, the remaining trio dominated the paint. Singh poured in a match-high 11 points to lead T&T to a decisive 21-12 victory and keep their qualification hopes alive.
In an inspiring display of toughness, Friday made a dramatic return to the court for the final and crucial group match against Honduras. His sudden re-entry injected immediate defensive energy and emotional intensity into the squad. Galvanised by his presence, T&T controlled the tempo from the opening whistle and powered to a convincing 21-14 triumph.
The result left T&T, Honduras, and Saint Lucia locked in a three-way tie at the top of the standings with identical 2-1 records. T&T ultimately captured first place and the sole main draw spot via the total points scored tiebreaker, tallying 56 total points to edge out Honduras (52) and Saint Lucia (51).
Having advanced, T&T returns to the court this evening for Pool C round-robin play, facing heavyweights Canada and Mexico. The top two teams from Pool C will advance directly into tomorrow’s knockout quarterfinals.
