Tenique Vincent and La Queen Welch were the standout performers of the National Association of Athletics Administrations of T&T (NAAATT) Track and Field series number two over the weekend. Both athletes showcased a blend of explosive speed and technical jumping ability to secure multiple gold medals at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Mucurapo, Port-of-Spain.
Vincent, representing Concorde Athletics Club, was a force to be reckoned with in the Girls’ Under-20 division. She dominated the high jump with a clearance of 1.65 metres before shifting gears to the track, where she powered home to win the 200m sprint in 24.46 seconds. Her prolific weekend also included a silver medal in the javelin (26.52m). This dominant showing followed a stellar performance in series one on January 10, where she also secured a double in the 100m hurdles and long jump, cementing her status as the most consistent junior performer in the country.
Matching that elite standard in the U-17 category, Welch of Queen’s Royal College (QRC) proved her class across two very different disciplines. Welch first conquered the grueling 400m hurdles in a time of 1:06.76 and followed up that performance by leaping to victory in the high jump with a best effort of 1.60m.
The middle-distance races were largely defined by Pace and Performance Athletics Club. Nyla Kerr dominated the U-17 girls’ 800m in 2:16.65, while the lone competitor in the U-20 girls’ 3,000m, Aniqah Bailey, showed incredible stamina to finish in 10:37.24. In the Men’s Open 800m, Omare Thompson held off a stiff challenge from University of T&T (UTT) Patriots’ Tafari Waldron to win in 1:53.89.
The Vincent family dominance was a multi-front effort, as Tenique’s brother, Tyrique Vincent, topped the Men’s Open pole vault by clearing 3.20m.
The 200m sprints provided some of the weekend’s closest finishes. In the U-17 Boys division, Burnley Athletics Club locked down the dash, led by Jayden Goodridge, who clocked a blistering 21.65. In second place was Dario Tavernier (22.10), followed by Aydan Davidson (22.14) in third. For the U-17 Girls, Eden Chee-Wah (Memphis) turned heads with a rapid 23.94. Meanwhile, in the Men’s Open, Revell Webster (Concorde) edged out Mourice Guevara in a photo finish, 21.35 to 21.38.
The field events remained equally competitive. Joshua Gonzales (Toco Tafac) secured gold in the Men’s Triple Jump (14.39m), narrowly beating Jean-Jon Matthews (14.37m) by just two centimetres. In the U-20 Boys Triple Jump, Kristiano Perez (QRC) impressed by breaking the 15-metre barrier with a winning jump of 15.63m. In the Open Women’s Javelin, Shawnelle Hamid (Toco Tafac) led the field with a throw of 25.87m.
The series concluded on a high note as the UTT Men’s 4x400m relay team claimed gold in 3:16.84, capping off a weekend that signals a promising year ahead for T&T athletics.
