Daniel Philip was among the winners in the open hand and weapons forms routines when the Wushu Association of T&T (WATT)–the National Body for Chinese Martial Arts –celebrated its 20th anniversary with a National Kung Fu Wushu Championship in St James, Port-of-Spain.
Apart from Philip, other top fighters were Mathew Balgobin, Elijah Philip, Daniel Jesurum, Nicholas Alexis, Ronald Ramlochan, Ian Jute, Jesus Villafana, Kathleen Davis, Jaden Powell, Pressan Seepersad, Michela Jabar, Josadech Williams, Kardaish Gobindass, Malinda Yearwood, Robertha Philip, Keston Earle, Ryan Bhulai, Reneve Bhulai, Jadan Pollard, Ganesh Maraj, Rajev Reesal and Clemson Richards. WATT Secretary General, Sifu Khabir said the association had taken a no nonsense approach to discipline and martial ethics.
"All Wushu events will start on time not a minute late," said Khabir. "Untidy uniforms or incorrect uniform worn by athletes, along with those arriving late, will be subject to a yellow card system for both student and instructors. "International standards are in effect and everyone must comply, regular fitness level test to be conducted monthly and only those who can meet the requirements will be chosen to represent the country in the 2010 Pan America Championships in Argentina."
The next National Kung Fu Wushu Championships will be January 17 at the Goshindo Dojo/Taichi Institute, 22 Agra Street, St James, from 10 am.
