The pupils of San Fernando Boys' RC school on Harris Promenade made it a Fantastic Friday to remember. With a mix of contemporary and traditional characters, they successfully captured the remedy for Carnival. The school's Music and Cultural Committee embarked on a holistic venture that incorporated different facets of Carnival to encourage and inform the children about the nation's celebration. The pupils created costumes with themes consistent with various personalities like, Felix Edinborough who portrays the pierrot grenade; Gemma Francis, the midnight robber; chutney entertainer Dervandra Ramdath and calypsonian Black Stalin. The pupils' innovative midnight robber was portrayed in tribute to Black Stalin.
Their pierrot grenade could well have posed a threat to other bands to cop junior band of the year in South. Even at their youthful age, the pupils' request for Palance by JW and Blaze was inevitable. They also had their own chutney calypso monarch competition this year. Winning the top prize were Standard Three pupil Deondra Straker, who sang Meh Grannie Making Roti. Second and third were David Eversely with Play Whe Nannie and Nalo Smart, who sang De Old Rusty Car. First Year Infants won the top spot in the parade of bands with Caribbean Unity and the Second Year class secured second place with their portrayal of Black Stalin's Caribbean man. Placing third was a combined effort by First and Second Year pupils with Tribute to Black Stalin.
