NA­TION­AL CY­CLING CHAM­PI­ONSHIPS

Carvalho pedals to surprise Wallerfield victory

Un­at­tached cy­clists, Mar­cus Car­val­ho stole the spot­light on the open­ing day of the Na­tion­al Cy­cling Cham­pi­onships Road Events when he ped­alled to vic­to­ry in the 40km In­di­vid­ual Time Tri­al yes­ter­day. The rid­ers be­gan at the half-way stage of the Milk Road, Waller­field be­fore ven­tur­ing on­to the East­ern Main Road, then to De­mer­ara Road be­fore turn­ing back at the Churchill Roo­sevelt High­way for three laps.Car­val­ho com­plet­ed the course in 54 min­utes, just ahead two-time na­tion­al cham­pi­on, Col­in Wil­son of Team Trek and Hum­ming­bird's Shel­don Ramjit.

Among the ju­niors, na­tion­al Ju­nior Pan Amer­i­can cy­clists, 19-year-old Varun Ma­haraj of Madon­na Wheel­ers won his Two-Lap ride ahead of 15-year-old Son­ic's ped­al­lists' Rudy Ash­ton and Park­side's Chris­t­ian Fair­ley to be­gin de­fence of his crown. To­day, the ac­tion shifts to the King George V Park, St Clair for the cri­teri­um from 2pm while the third and fi­nal leg comes off next Sun­day (Sep­tem­ber 5) with a Road Race start­ing at La Ro­maine at 7am.
