The national cricketers turned up for trials yesterday, only to be greeted by a wet National Cricket Centre (NCC), as their second trial match in four days was completely washed out. Coach of the national team Kelvin Williams said the bad weather would have killed off the chances of the fringe players, as there are no more trial matches scheduled. "The rain I think would have killed off the chances of the players on the periphery. With no more trial matches carded and the team to play in the regional 50 overs championships is expected to be chosen tonight (last night) and the rain robbed the players of the chance to demand a spot.
"We have all our international players available and this would have made it difficult for the fringe players to get in. They would have needed the opportunity to address the selectors with great performances but the opportunities were limited by the rain." Meanwhile, the former T&T all rounder said he was pleased with the performance of most of the players who took part in the two trial matches and he is hoping that they continue in that vein. "We had some good performances in the trials and I am hoping that the men who did well can continue.
"Lendl Simmons has vast talent but sometimes he does not know how to use it well. He batted brilliantly in the trials and we are hoping he continues. Many times before he got runs in the trials but failed to live up to expectations in the tournament. We are hoping for a different result from him this time around." The T&T team will play four practice matches locally before flying out to Jamaica on October 12. They open their warm-up campaign on Saturday against a TTCB Academy team at the NCC.
