KHANTY-MANSIYSK–Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago were in winners' row in men's action but Jamaica's women had to rescue pride for the country again as the 39th World Chess Olympiad continued Tuesday in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. In a good day for English-speaking Caribbean teams after Monday's string of poor results, Barbados beat Suriname 31 while T&T salvaged their fortunes in the tournament with a 3-1/2 1/2 win against Papua New Guinea.
Barbados' win proved to be revenge for their loss at the 2004 Olympiad in Spain and their charge was led by FIDE Master Delisle Warner and national champion Martyn Del Castilho who beat Franklyn Mungroo and Suradj Hanoeman respectively. International Master Terry Farley and FIDE Master Dr Philip Corbin pulled off draws to consolidate Barbados' victory.
T&T, meanwhile, were propelled by FIDE Master Ryan Harper, Marcus Joseph and FIDE Master Keron Cabralis who also scored wins to hammer Papua New Guinea. FIDE Master Rupert Jones staved off defeat to secure the only points for his team against Ravishen Singh. Jamaica were not so fortunate as they went down to one of the Olympiad Special teams, losing 2-1/2 1-1/2 but their women shone again, scoring a big 3-1/2 1/2 triumph against Yemen. CMC
