In the last two weeks $165,302,500 worth of marijuana was destroyed during Operation Weedeater 2010. This was disclosed yesterday by Defence Force Captain Ashook Singh at the Operation Weedeater 2010 media briefing at Biche High School, Biche. In his presentation, Singh said since Operation Weedeater 2010 began on November 15 a total of $165,302,500 worth of marijuana had been destroyed.
He said in the Biche area an estimated $46,382,500 worth of marijuana was destroyed while in the Moruga area some $51,800,000 was burnt. He said in the Grande Riviere/Matura area an estimated $65,300,000 worth of marijuana was destroyed. He said roadblock operations in "hot spot" areas led to the arrests of six individuals in possession of marijuana which was valued at $20,000.
Singh said, additionally, a further $1.8 million worth of marijuana was retrieved by Coast Guard patrols off the coast of Grande Riviere and one individual was arrested. He said overall teams made 130 trips, via helicopter, over five days into the forested areas off Biche and Navet, Moruga and Grande Riviere. Weedeater 2010 was a collaborative effort between the T&T Police Service (TTPS), the T&T Defence Force (TTDF) and the Special Anti-Crime Unit of T&T (SAUTT).
