Throughout the world policing is being hampered by the use of camera phones and this is having a negative impact on frontline policing, especially for first responders.
There are many occasions, both at home and abroad, where use of the camera phone tends to inhibit officers from using aggressive measures and lawful force when needed. More so when dealing with dangerous armed criminals whose sole intent is to kill or injure.
I am saying this in reference to the shooting of Police Sergeant Ricardo Morris who, in the act of making an arrest of an individual armed with a high powered rifle, was shot and luckily for him, only injured.
From information obtained, Sgt Morris grew up in the Sea Lots community, educated himself being a holder of two university degrees and is pursuing another in law. From information obtained his life was spared because of his having been bred in the community.
Ironically, Sgt Morris is the individual who with the intent of giving back to his community, introduced many educational and social programmes and is loved by many.
I am saying that the training and discipline with reference to the usage of firearms in the police service along with the mindset of officers need to be upgraded to face those armed individuals whose sole aim is to kill. We are at war with criminals on the streets.
A message to our law enforcement officers: do not let modern technology prevent you from being stern in carrying out your lawful duties.
