Pastor appointed to replace Ramkhelawan

A new In­de­pen­dent Sen­a­tor has been ap­point­ed to fill the va­can­cy left by the sud­den res­ig­na­tion of Sub­has Ramkhelawan in the Sen­ate.Pres­i­dent An­tho­ny Car­mona an­nounced the ap­point­ment of Rev­erend Joy Eve­lyn Ab­dul-Mo­han yes­ter­day in a me­dia state­ment.Ramkhelawan, the for­mer co-or­di­na­tor of the In­de­pen­dent bench, an­nounced his res­ig­na­tion on Thurs­day, in the face of a crim­i­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to the con­tro­ver­sial First Cit­i­zens IPO (ini­tial pub­lic of­fer­ing) share sale.

He al­so stepped down as chair­man of the Trinidad and To­ba­go Stock Ex­change.At­tor­ney Gen­er­al Anand Ram­lo­gan said last week the share is­sue was re­ferred to the Di­rec­tor of Pub­lic Pros­e­cu­tions, the Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice and the Se­cu­ri­ties Ex­change Com­mis­sion for in­ves­ti­ga­tion.Par­lia­men­tary sources said yes­ter­day that Sen­a­tor He­len Dray­ton was ex­pect­ed to as­sume the role of co-or­di­na­tor of the In­de­pen­dent bench­es.

On to­day's agen­da, in the Sen­ate, leg­is­la­tors are al­so ex­pect­ed to de­bate Nurs­es and Mid­wives Reg­is­tra­tion Act, which will be pre­sent­ed by health Min­is­ter Dr Fuad Khan.The En­vi­ron­ment and Wa­ter Re­sources Min­is­ter Gan­ga Singh is ex­pect­ed to an­swer a ques­tion from Op­po­si­tion Sen­a­tor Camille Robin­son-Reg­is about an in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to al­le­ga­tions of bid-rig­ging, in re­spect of Con­tract WTC 197/2011 is­sued by WASA, in the sum of ap­prox­i­mate­ly $70 m dol­lars.She al­so wants Singh to give the sta­tus of this in­ves­ti­ga­tion, if in­deed, one is on-go­ing and to con­firm whether this al­le­ga­tion of bid-rig­ging, or any re­lat­ed con­duct, was re­port­ed to ei­ther the Au­di­tor Gen­er­al, the In­tegri­ty Com­mis­sion or to the Po­lice. The sit­ting be­gins at 10 am.

About the Sen­a­tor

Rev­erend Joy Eve­lyn Ab­dul-Mo­han, a cler­gy of the Pres­by­ter­ian Church, re­ceived her Lice­ni­ate in The­ol­o­gy (L.Th) at St An­drew's The­o­log­i­cal Col­lege, T&T, in 1987. She was or­dained as a Min­is­ter of Words and Sacra­ment of the Pres­by­ter­ian Church of Trinidad and To­ba­go in 1989 and in 1993 re­ceived her Mas­ters of Arts De­gree (MA) from Prince­ton The­o­log­i­cal Sem­i­nary, USA.

Dur­ing her 25 years as a min­is­ter she served many pas­toral re­gions, held high po­si­tions in sev­er­al in­sti­tu­tions in­clud­ing prin­ci­pal of St An­drew's The­o­log­i­cal Col­lege.

She was the first lo­cal woman to grad­u­ate from the min­is­te­r­i­al pro­gramme at St An­drew's The­o­log­i­cal Col­lege, and the first such trained woman to be Or­dained in the Pres­by­ter­ian Church in Trinidad and To­ba­go.Ab­dul-Mo­han is orig­i­nal­ly from Loth­i­an Road, Princes Town. She has two broth­ers, and is mar­ried to Dar­ryl Joseph Mo­han, a project man­ag­er with a Point Lisas com­pa­ny.She was born on De­cem­ber 1, 1965.
