Calypsonian Penguin to be laid to rest today

The fu­ner­al ser­vice for Seadley Joseph, bet­ter known in the ca­lyp­so world as Pen­guin, takes place to­day.He died, aged 70, on Sun­day at his Trinci­ty home af­ter ail­ing for some time. His fu­ner­al takes place at 2 pm St Charles RC Church, East­ern Main Road, Tu­na­puna and he will be cre­mat­ed at Bel­grove's at 5 pm.

A re­lease from the Trin­ba­go Uni­fied Ca­lyp­so­ni­ans' Or­gan­i­sa­tion (TU­CO) hailed him as "A King with a Com­mon Touch." He was de­scribed as "a bril­liant com­pos­er and as a leader who en­cour­aged the spir­it of democ­ra­cy."Joseph's com­po­si­tions such as Look the Dev­il Dey, Deputy Es­sen­tial and Soft Man, the re­lease said, made the world rich­er.

The re­lease re­called Joseph's eight years as TU­CO's pres­i­dent. "The Seadley Joseph who came to the fore and gave his all for TU­CO," it said, "was the same man–qui­et, unas­sum­ing and pos­sessed with a de­sire to point a new di­rec­tion."
