A 28-year-old man from Trincity died on Thursday night in a car crash at Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain. According to police reports, around 11.10 pm, Dexter Ifill, of First Street, Cane Farm, Trincity, was driving his red Hyundai Tucson west along the Beetham Highway when he lost control near the lighthouse. Ifill worked with the Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA).
Ifill's car crashed into a utility pole on the southern side of the highway before crossing a barrier and landing in the sea. Fire officers assigned to the Wrightson Road Fire Station responded and removed Ifill's vehicle and his body. Ifill was pronounced dead on the scene and the mangled wreckage was towed to the Besson Street Police Station.
Investigators believe Ifill died from the impact with the utility pole and not from being submerged in the water. Up to late yesterday, the road-fatality toll stood at 38, according to police records. Sgts Coggins and Hoyte visited the scene and are investigating.
