Jam sessions, workshops and a fund-raising concert are on the agenda of the Ethnic Jazz Club for the next three months. "Talk, Play, Listen, is the title for the workshops in which knowledgeable, practicing musicians explain and demonstrate performance and improvisation techniques," the organisation said in a press release. "Participants are invited to bring their instruments so that they actually get to practice the techniques. Musicians are then able to bring this information to the jam sessions which are open to musicians of all levels and listeners as well."
Starting October 1, with a jam session at James Place, 51 Cornelio Street, Woodbrook, the events will climax with in concert on November 24 at the Little Carib Theatre featuring Lydian Singer Janine Charles-Faray, pannists Keisha Codrington and Natasha Joseph, and Chantal Esdelle and Moyenne. "The concert is a fund-raiser for Ship, the Student Health Intervention Programme," the release said. "The programme assists young students in need at Bishop Anstey High School and is administered by past students of the school." The last event on the 2012 Ethnic Jazz Club calendar is an End of Year Jam Session in early December.
The Ethnic Jazz Club is headed by Esdelle, whose band plays Caribbean jazz. The concert, called Women in Jazz, is the fourth of its kind, the series having begun in 2003 with a show featuring Cuban group Bellita y Jazztumbata and Esdelle and Moyenne. Sunday's Jazz Jam Session runs from 4-6.30 pm. Participation is free but RSVP is required.
