An unidentified man was killed by police during a shoot-out on Wednesday in Caparo.
The incident occurred as Central Division police were responding to a report of a robbery at an ice factory at Caparo Brasso Valley Road involving four gunmen. They were given the licence plate number of the alleged getaway vehicle.
While on the way at 9.45 am, the officers saw a black Hyundai Elantra bearing the licence plate number heading in the opposite direction.
The officers tried to block the vehicle’s path but it veered to the right and eluded the police vehicle. A backseat passenger in the getaway car then allegedly began shooting at the police. The officers returned fire and the vehicle crashed off the road. The occupants allegedly came out with guns pointed, and the police opened fire. One of the men was hit and fell to the ground. He was later pronounced dead at the Chaguanas Health Facility.
Based on information gathered, the officers then went to a forested area shortly after and saw masked gunmen. When the officers called on them to stop, they allegedly pointed their weapons at the officers, who opened fire on them. They, however, managed to escape.
With assistance from the Air Support Unit, the officers conducted searches but the suspects were not found. However, the officers recovered a Glock pistol with an extended magazine, one round of 9mm ammunition and two masks.
The man remained unidentified up to yesterday.
Meanwhile, during an intelligence-led operation under the supervision of Snr Supt Simon, Supt Gloden, Supt Gyan, ASP Ablacksingh, Insp Petit and Sgt Bagoo, a Mac-10 firearm and a magazine containing 11 9mm rounds of ammo were discovered at Flemming Street, Longdonville.
The discovery was made after officers of the Longdenville police post, including ag Cpl Phillip, ag Cpl Hollwah and PC Stewart received information that a man was seen with a firearm near an abandoned shed in that area. However, no one was arrested.
