Security Minister Jack Warner yesterday congratulated cabinet colleague Anil Roberts, Minister of Sport, on what he described as "the successful delivery of the second Spirit of Sports Awards (SOSA)."
The awards were held last Friday, at the Queen's Hall in St Ann's.
Warner said:?"Of all the things that I have seen accomplished by you in your short life as a politician, I particularly salute this one because of the relevance it holds for sport development in Trinidad and Tobago and unity across the Caribbean archipelago.
"One writer noted that "What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains immortal" and if there is any truth to this statement then in more ways than one your acts have immortalised you in the history of Trinidad and Tobago."
The former FIFA?vice president, who is credited with taking T&T to its first World Cup Final in Germany 2006, said 2012 stood as a watershed for sport in the history of Trinidad and Tobago. "We came away with the largest medal haul at any international games. We accumulated the largest number of points ever at an Olympic meeting. In swimming, George Bovell III ineffaceably stamped Trinidad and
Tobago into the annals of global swimming history and for the first time in four years, Trinidad and Tobago again has qualified for the Caribbean Gold Cup.
"While SOSA my friend was all about the Spirit of Sports, accolades should be poured upon you for cultivating that spirit even if it is only for recognising the talent of Keshorn Walcott long before many even heard his name; an act no doubt which catapulted him to the top of javelin throwers across the global village."
Warner continued:?"The fruits of your labour are sweet and you truly deserve them. May the success you occasion today be the platform for greater achievements tomorrow. May the passion you bring infect us all and may glory be showered on our twin Republic."
He urged Roberts to keep up the good work. "In this life in which we live, some are dreamers and yes some are talented. You my friend are both. May God therefore continue you to endow you with the wisdom to take us nation to even greater heights."
