Man charged with stealing WASA pipes

A 28-year-old man was placed on $50,000 bail af­ter he ap­peared in court charged with lar­ce­ny of two lengths of 20-inch iron pipes which are be­lieved to have been stolen from the Wa­ter and Sew­er­age Au­thor­i­ty (WASA) stock­pile in Williamsville. In a press re­lease yes­ter­day, gen­er­al man­ag­er cor­po­rate com­mu­ni­ca­tions, Ellen Lewis, said the duc­tile iron pipes, val­ued at $16,000, which were found at Pond Lane off School Road, Gas­par­il­lo, were not as­so­ci­at­ed with Mon­day's theft.

An­to­nio Singh, 28, was ar­rest­ed by WASA se­cu­ri­ty led by se­cu­ri­ty head Anand Ram­soon­dar at his home around 11 am, af­ter a tip-off. Singh ap­peared be­fore a Jus­tice of the Peace at the Ch­agua­nas Mag­is­trates' Court and was grant­ed $50,000 bail.The ex­ca­va­tor op­er­a­tor is ex­pect­ed to reap­pear in court to­day. WASA has ap­pealed to deal­ers of scrap iron and met­al to be on the look­out for peo­ple of­fer­ing it's pipeline in­fra­struc­ture for sale.
