For Anthony “Tony Xanda” Alexander, a good soca parang perfectly blends the authentic elements of traditional parang music with that of modern soca. With the countdown already on to Christmas Day and as T&T observed Parang History Month last month in September, he joined the celebrations with his new song, Duck She.
The lively track uses humour to tell the story of his neighbour, “Suzette,” who asks for help every Christmas. Whether it’s pruning trees or cutting the grass in the yard, there’s always something that needs to be done. But this year, he said he has a plan. “I not taking that right now with this woman,” he sings.
“I’ll pack meh bags and I will sneak out to d car. I heading by my family in Moruga.” He then makes it clear he will be enjoying himself at a parang lime and she won’t be able to find him. In the end, he reveals he sold his house so he’s “never coming back” to be pestered by her further.
Alexander, who has been involved in parang and soca parang for almost three decades, wrote and produced the track.
He said its creation stemmed back to 2019. Like many, he put it on “pause” because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Only recently (at the) end of 2025 I started working on it as much as I could,” he told WE Life and Culture. “And only a few months ago, around the end of June, I focused on it a little more and completed it mid-August in time to release for the parang season.”
He said the public’s reception to the song has been great so far, and he hopes it continues to reach more people and that they “get to enjoy the music the way it was intended to be.”
This is evident by comments under the song’s YouTube video, with some saying they felt like putting up their Christmas tree upon hearing it. “Perfect way to start the season,” one user wrote. Another said, “This song have a vibe for real, yes.”
Alexander added, “Honestly, I have a good feeling about it. I had a vision and I think, for the most part, it was executed. There’s always room for improvement or things I would’ve done differently, but this is what was made and I’m proud of it.”
Asked what he believes a good soca parang tune entails, he said the authentic acoustics of parang blended with the electronic elements of modern-day music. “More or less marrying the two to create something unique–whether it be drums, keys, etc., once you get that blend, it comes out right.” And Duck She does just that.
He takes great pride in being able to create his own music, adding that he will be doing many solo performances this upcoming Christmas season, as well as alongside his parang band Los Errantes. He is the leader of the band as well as its managing director. He also hinted that more music is already on the way.
Duck She is available on all digital music streaming platforms.
