Cashing groceries

Trinidad and To­ba­go's rate of in­fla­tion, which mea­sures the per­cent­age change in the all-items in­dex, for the pe­ri­od Au­gust 2023 to Au­gust 2024 was 0.4 per cent, ac­cord­ing to the Cen­tral Sta­tis­ti­cal Of­fice (CSO).

This rate is less than that ob­served for the pe­ri­od Au­gust 2022 to Au­gust 2023 which was 4.0 per cent.

For the pe­ri­od Au­gust 2023 to Au­gust 2024, the price of food and non-al­co­holic bev­er­ages in­creased by an av­er­age of 1.5 per cent. Be­tween, Au­gust 2022 and Au­gust 2024, the rate of in­fla­tion of food and non-al­co­holic bev­er­ages was 7.18 per cent.

The CSO said the in­dex for food and non-al­co­holic bev­er­ages de­creased from 149.6 in Ju­ly 2024 to 149.2 in Au­gust 2024, re­flect­ing a de­crease of 0.3%.

Con­tribut­ing sig­nif­i­cant­ly to this de­crease was the gen­er­al down­ward move­ment in the prices of toma­toes, cel­ery, pump­kin, bo­di, green sweet pep­pers, fresh carite, ed­does, soya bean oil, mixed fresh sea­son­ing and pi­men­to.

How­ev­er, the full im­pact of these price de­creas­es were off­set by the gen­er­al in­crease in the prices of par­boiled rice, fresh whole chick­en, irish pota­toes, onions, sweet pota­toes, eggs, white flour, dasheen, car­rots and or­anges. Price changes in this sec­tion for the month of Au­gust 2024 ac­count­ed for a net over­all de­crease of 0.1 points.
