Digicel Business has stepped up to improve cybersecurity awareness.
In a news release yesterday, Digicel said it had “taken a hands-on approach to helping the local business community understand cybersecurity and develop action plans to help secure their businesses and customers against cyber-attacks”.
According to the release, Digicel Business recently hosted an intimate lunch-and-learn workshop at the Digicel Hospitality Suite at the Queen’s Park Oval, for select corporate customers. The session featured interactive presentations by Bryan Kane, director of innovation and strategy at Digicel Business Group and Rory Ebanks, director of cybersecurity at Symptai Consulting Limited, a leading cybersecurity, digital transformation and anti-money laundering firm based in Kingston, Jamaica.
The session was part of its ongoing customer education drive for Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October.
During his presentation titled Building a Security-Minded Culture Kane said, “Global statistics show that a cyber-attack happens every 39 seconds, but what’s even more concerning is that 70 per cent of all attacks are because of human error or cause.
“That’s why the best defence against attackers is having a robust cybersecurity, inclusive of appropriate technology, mitigation strategies, ongoing personnel training and a comprehensive action plan.”
He urged organisations to build a cybersecurity-minded culture as soon as possible, and not wait until after a breach occurs.
“Our survey of over 3,000 businesses across the region found that most do not have documented plans to treat with cyber threats,” he said.
“With the increasing dependence on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems, cyber-attacks in today’s digitally driven landscape are a persistent and evolving challenge faced by organisations worldwide.”
