Energy Minister Stuart Young met with Woodside Energy’s president and country chair, Kellyanne Lochan, in the Senate on Tuesday.
In a news release, the Ministry of Energy said Lochan updated Young on Woodside Energy’s assets in T&T.
The ministry said natural gas production at the Angostura field and the Calypso project’s deepwater gas resource were among the areas discussed between the two.
Young emphasized that the Government is prepared to work with all energy stakeholders to drive investments towards the continued production of oil and gas in existing fields and to explore the further development of resources in Trinidad and Tobago.
In keeping with this momentum, a team of Woodside Energy representatives will be meeting with the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries later this year.
Both parties agreed to keep communications open with Woodside Energy reiterating its commitment to TT’s hydrocarbon resource development.
Tuesday’s meeting was the third time Young met with officials from Woodside in the last three months.
On July 27, he met with Woodside Energy’s Shiva McMahon, executive vice president, International Operations Lochan, Marius Kotze, vice president of Human Resources, and Dr Carla Noel Mendes. Those discussions included an update on Woodside’s Calypso project.
Young met with Woodside officials on August 22, during which the discussions again included the Calypso deepwater project.
Woodside produced an average of 338 million standard cubic feet per day for the first six months of 2023, making it the third largest supplier of natural gas in T&T, after bpTT with 1.19 billion standard cubic feet and Shell with 750 million standard cubic feet.
Woodside Energy is an Australian oil and natural gas company, which completed a merger with BHP’s oil and gas portfolio, in June 2022.
The transaction resulted in Woodside shareholders owning about 52 per cent of the merged entity.
Speaking on the day the transaction was completed, BHP CEO Mike Henry said: “The merger of our petroleum assets with Woodside creates a global energy company with the scale and opportunity to help supply the energy needed for global growth and development in a rapidly decarbonising world.”
