An 18-year-old labourer of Sunflower Drive, Pleasantville, is expected to appear at the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court today, following his arrest in connection with a robbery over the weekend.
The man was arrested and charged on November 4 with three counts of robbery with aggravation.
In a statement, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service stated that around 2:50 pm on Saturday 2 November PCs Richardson, Loutan, and Jugmohan, responded to a robbery report at a store located on Pointe-a-Pierre Road, San Fernando.
While conducting inquiries at the scene, the officers interviewed several people and received information, then proceeded to Baliser Avenue, Pleasantville, where the suspects were seen.
A chase ensued, which led officers to a bushy area near a drain in the vicinity of Pleasantville Health Centre and Pleasantville Community Centre, located along Prince Albert Street, Pleasantville.
According to the release, one of the suspects allegedly pointed a Smith and Wesson pistol at the officers, "who seeing the imminent danger, responded with gunfire in self-defence."
Another suspect, a 26-year-old man later identified as Zion Cooper, was hit and then taken to San Fernando General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
A third suspect, aged 18, was detained, and the officers seized a Smith and Wesson Model 59 pistol along with three rounds of ammunition.
