A church camp at Guayaguayare turned tragic for a Tableland family on Carnival Tuesday.
Maria Modeste, 15, who was camping with the church group and members of her family drowned while bathing at Pilot River.
According to reports, around 1 pm on Carnival Tuesday, the Form Four Cowen Hamilton Secondary School student left the camping area to take a bath in the nearby Pilot River.
Modeste was in the company of a few others from the group who were not interested in playing cricket with other members on the sea shore.
Police reports indicated that Modeste disappeared a short while later in water.
An alarm was raised and a search party quickly formed to find her. However, her lifeless body was recovered around midnight.
A party of officers from the Mayaro Police Station, including Inspectors Etienne and Fonrose, Sgt Ramsahai, PCs Rampersad, Ali, Dennis and Meighoo along with WPC Sookoo, responded to the distress call.
The body was viewed by the district medical officer and ordered removed to the Sangre Grande mortuary for an autopsy. Mayaro police are continuing investigations.
