Six months after Fyzabad pensioner Henry Mungal was stabbed to death and his body set afire at his home, a teenager and two others appeared in court charged with his murder.
The accused, Israel Mascall, Kofi Taylor, and a 17-year-old minor, stood before Master Gray on Friday. They were represented by attorneys Michael Maharaj, Satesh Emrit, and Krysan Rambert, respectively.
Mungal, 74, also known as "Bat," lived alone at the corner of John Jules Road Extension and Joseph Street, Fyzabad. Investigators said he was last seen alive at his home around 5 pm on June 1, 2024. Around 8 pm, the accused were reportedly seen leaving the property as smoke emanated from the house.
The following day, at approximately 3:30 pm., Mungal’s charred body was discovered lying on a burnt wooden bed in his bedroom by a friend who went to check on him. The body bore apparent stab wounds to the stomach, and the surrounding area was blackened with soot.
Police recovered a knife from the house. An autopsy later confirmed he was stabbed repeatedly in the chest and abdomen before his body was set on fire.
All three accused have been remanded into custody. The matter has been scheduled for January 10, 2025, before the Children’s Court to determine jurisdiction and issue a scheduling order.
