Three inmates of the Port-of -pain Prison are expected to appear before a Master of the High Court next week charged with possession of prohibited articles, in contravention of Section 8 (1) (f) of the Prison Service Act.
The charges stem from an intelligence-led exercise conducted at the Prison between 5:30 pm on November 26, and 3 am, on November 27.
The exercise was coordinated by Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence and Investigations, Suzette Martin, Acting Assistant Commissioner of Prisons Davis, Acting Superintendent of Prisons Ankatiah and Insp. Telesford. It also included officers from the DCP Intelligence and Investigations Operations Unit, Crime Scene Unit and the Prison Service Operations Unit.
During the exercise, the officers searched a prison cell where they found a quantity of items including cannabis, cigarettes, blades, cellular phones, USB cables and lighters.
A search of another cell resulted in the discovery of cellular phones, headsets, lighters, knives and chargers.
Investigations into the findings resulted in an exercise conducted between 10 am and 1 pm on Friday during which three inmates were arrested and charged with the offences.
Officers from the DCP Intelligence and Investigations Operations Unit laid the charges.
