One year after the mysterious deaths of thirty-four-year-old Shevonne Moffat and sixty-two-year-old Gemma Alexis in a Moriah apartment, their family is still wondering what happened to them.
The sisters were found dead on December 27 last year by the landlord but despite autopsies on their bodies, the cause of death remains unknown.
Their autopsy reports came back inconclusive, leaving police to wait on toxicology reports on the bodies.
Contacted for an update on the case, Moffat’s uncle, who didn’t want to be named, said police and forensic experts have not provided any clear explanations, leaving the family with more questions than answers.
Speaking to Guardian Media, the relative lamented, “It’s a total mystery. It’s a situation with all of us that is out of this world, and it is totally ironic how it is up to now we haven’t gotten any answer from the police or the forensic department.
“It is really baffling how we haven’t gotten an answer concerning the deaths of two women. What’s going on? We are left with more questions than answers over the past 12 months.”
He said he has been deeply affected by the loss, so much so he fell ill shortly after hearing about the deaths and has been on medication ever since. He said he couldn’t even attend the funeral because he couldn’t cope with the grief.
“The authorities aren’t giving us answers up to now. It hurts so much, and it doesn’t make sense. Shevonne’s death put me in hospital. I got a head stroke right after, and from then to now, I’m on medication. I’m sick. I didn’t go to the funeral because I couldn’t take it.”
After a year of no answers, he said the family has stopped asking for information, feeling they may never know the truth. He said the mystery still haunts the family, but he will continue to hope that one day the truth will finally come to light.
Gemma was discovered lying on her back on the bed, wearing a white nightgown. Shevonne was found on the floor beside the bed, with her head resting on Gemma’s lap. There were no signs of violence on their bodies.
Shevonne moved to Tobago soon after her mother was murdered years ago. Gemma visited her for the season last year. The sisters were last seen heading to the apartment on Christmas Eve.
“We are not going looking for any answer, but if one comes to us, we will accept it. Right now, we are not going to search because we realised it’s a no-no even asking for an answer concerning the deaths of those two sisters,” the relative said.
Attempts to get an update on police investigation into the case were unsuccessful.
