What could be one of the Caribbean’s most towering Christmas trees has made its grand debut, accompanied by a heartfelt wish from its owner for an end to crime and violence this festive season.
Wayne Ali, the popular Secret Santa for over 35 years who was unmasked by Guardian Media a few years back, says he remains committed to spreading Christmas joy among families.
Overlooking St Joseph Village and other parts of the South City, the magnificent 80-foot tree bedecked with more than 30,000 lights stood twinkling into the night sky during its launch on Sunday night. Patrons were treated to an array of Christmas food, drinks and dancing.
Ali said, that despite recent spikes in crime and the occasional kidnappings, he is continuing the tradition of opening Santa’s Wonderland at his home.
“I’ve been opening Santa’s Wonderland for the past 23 years. People would know me as the Secret Santa. For many years I shared toys in the poorer villages of central Trinidad and I stopped doing that five years ago. However, I will continue to have this Santa’s Wonderland every year,” Ali said.
The joyous laughter of children continues to be Ali’s inspiration.
“Christmas is truly for children, and witnessing their sheer happiness overwhelms me. I strive to spread joy among adults too,” he said.
Ali revealed that 60 per cent of this year’s lights were new and the introduction of a snow machine this year had brought delight to the visiting children.
“This year we also have a snow machine and it’s a hit with the children,” he said.
About 15 years ago when kidnappings were rampant, Ali said other businesspeople told him he was a “madman” for opening his house to the public.
“I told them God will protect me. I am making children happy. Since I opened Santa Wonderland 23 years ago, thousands of children have passed through my home,” he added.
Expressing his Christmas wish for 2023, Ali said he wanted every citizen to have a meal.
“We have a lot of homeless people and poor people. I would like to see happiness throughout and I want an end to crime,” he said.
Ali acknowledged that he had hired extra security but his faith in God makes him feel protected. While steering clear of political involvement, Ali extended a plea for unity.
“I don’t get into politics but I really wish both parties can work together and get to the root of why we have so much crime. I also hope things could pick up in the energy sector,” Ali said.
The Secret Santa also extended his heartfelt wishes for peace and prosperity to the entire citizenry during this season of goodwill.
