After a two-year break, 25 incarcerated females were given the opportunity to re-unite with their children and families at a programme titled 'A Mother's Love', on Saturday 14 May 2022, at the Golden Grove Prison, Arouca.
A release from the Prison Service explains that the last time the initiative was conducted was back in 2019. It had been put on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It was undertaken by the Programmes Department, under the directive of Commissioner of Prisons (Ag.), Deopersad Ramoutar.
The Prison Service says there were many emotional and affectionate reconciliations among the families participating in the event.
Commissioner Ramoutar said it was essential that healthy familial bonds were maintained and promised that the Prison Service will continue to do its part in supporting families in this way.
It was a sentiment reiterated by Deputy Commissioner of Prisons responsible for Programmes and Industry, Carlos Corraspe, who said there was a need for, “enhanced familial gestures, as the Prison Service was doing everything possible to keep and strengthen the bonds between incarcerated persons and their children and families.”
Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds MP, fully endorsed the family-centric initiative. Minister Hinds had been visiting Golden Grove on other business relative to structural upgrades to the prison, and took the opportunity to commend the Prisons Executive, as well as deliver impromptu remarks in support of the participating families.
The Prison Service says karaoke was among the many activities enjoyed by the children and families for over three hours on the special day. They also received tokens, goody bags, pictures, treats, as they created beautiful memories during their precious family time.
