The annual re-enactment of the Canboulay Riots of 1881, which forms part of the NCC’s annual Carnival offerings, will not be put on this year by the National Carnival Commission (NCC), and will be held at NAPA, National Academy for the Performing Arts.
According to a release issued by the Commission, the re-enactment will be staged for two days.
“Instead of this production, which was originally scheduled for Friday February 25 at 5 am, there will be two stagings of the epic re-enactment at the NAPA, carded for two days, Friday, February 25 at 5.00 a.m. and 8.00 pm, and Sunday February 27 at 11.30 pm,” the NCC statement explained.
It added: “The Commission is of the view that, in light of the overall paucity of resources available to the Carnival 2022 initiative, a greater communal benefit would be derived from its direct support of the annual production at its closely located sister organisation, rather than by the unnecessary and costly duplication of efforts.”
The annual re-enactment is spearheaded by Mrs. Pearl Eintou Springer and the Idakeda Group.
“The Commission wishes Mrs. Pearl Eintou Springer and the Idakeda Group abundant success with this historically and culturally relevant presentation,” the NCC said.
