A man was killed during a police-involved shooting in Carapichaima on yesterday morning.
The victim has been identified as Devon “OB” Lewis, 31, of Mungal Trace, Orange Field Road. Lewis was a construction worker.
According to a police report, at about 4.30 am a team of police officers from the Central Division acting on intelligence received went to the house.
On approaching the front door, officers alleged that they were shot at from someone inside the house.
The officers returned fire shooting Lewis several times about the body. He died on the scene.
Police said they allegedly recovered a Glock .9mm pistol.
Police said Lewis was well known to them as he was believed to be involved in gun-related offences.
However, relatives have strongly condemned the information given by the police saying that he had no gun and was never involved in any gun-related offences.
Speaking with the Guardian Media on Thursday, one of Lewis’ brothers said that his brother was asleep in the ground level of their split level home when the police officers showed up.
“The police came up straight to the door and began banging on it very loudly waking up my brother and my mother’s husband who was sleeping upstairs. My mother was not at home because she usually finishes work at 5 am,” the brother said.
“So with the banging my brother woke up and pulled the curtain to see who was banging on the door that’s when the police fired one shot at him through the window hitting him in the face. With that he fell back and by that time the officers broke down the door and entered and shot him twice finishing the job. Then they grabbed his body and throw him in a police jeep. He fell out onto the roadway. They picked him up and throw him back into the vehicle and left with him,” he added.
Lewis’ relatives are calling for justice, “Whatever the police saying it’s not true. Let’s leave the judging to God.”
