Heads of the Chambers of Commerce in Chaguanas have suggested that political parties appoint aldermen from the business community.
Mukesh Ramsingh, the president of the Couva-Point Lisas Chamber of Commerce, said having an alderman on board a regional body would be a plus when it comes to making decisions of the council that would impact local businesses.
Ramsingh said the leadership of a regional body should change every time a new council is elected to allow for new ideas to breathe and to keep down nepotism. Ramsingh said the head of the Couva/Tabaquite/Talparo Regional Corporation invites the CPLCC to participate when they have discussions pertaining to projects.
He added, “The system of putting an alderman should really shift from appointing a party activist who serves as a party overseer to one where we have persons from various interest groups as business, religion and sports taking part in the decision-making process of the council when it comes to bringing services to the people.”
Baldath Maharaj, president of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce said, “We would like the political parties to ensure that in appointing a mayor his/her business acumen within the boundaries should be considered.”
