Chaguanas police have been given two mechanically refurbished vehicles to assist them in the battle against crime.
Although the vehicles looked somewhat dilapidated and banged up on the outside, $52,000 was spent to restore them to sound mechanical order.
The handing over took place yesterday at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation, following a meeting between borough workers and members of the Chaguanas Chamber of Industry and Commerce (CCIC).
CCIC president Richie Sookhai said the business community is fed-up of the crime. He told acting Police Commissioner Mc Donald Jacob that businessmen have only received promises and little action.
“We have reached our limit and that’s why we have reached out to you in such a way that some sort of relief could be given to the business community,” Sookhai said.
Sookhai said although more new businesses are opening in Chaguanas, businesspeople are very concerned about the increase in crime.
He said, “We need that sort of assurance from the TTPS that something is being done.”
Sookhai said the chamber has been lobbying for almost a decade to get cameras up in Felicity, near the cremation site and the river where contraband enters the country.
He said Republic Bank’s Couva branch was broken into although it is opposite the police station.
“When things like this occur, it sends a shocking message to the business community,” he said.
