It's a pe­ri­od of 40 days dur­ing which Chris­tians re­mem­ber the events lead­ing up to and in­clud­ing the death of Je­sus Christ, whose life and teach­ings are the foun­da­tion of Chris­tian­i­ty.

Some Catholics had an ear­ly start to their day get­ting ash­es at the Cathe­dral of the Im­mac­u­late Con­cep­tion in down­town Port of Spain.

The ash­es are a re­minder that from dust we were made to dust we shall re­turn.
