Searches by the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard for three fishermen who were reported missing at sea almost two weeks ago have turned up empty.
In a statement, the T&T Coast Guard said on October 4, it received reports indicating that three persons left Moruga to go fishing on September 28 and had not returned.
While the Coast Guard commenced a Search and Rescue operation with the assistance of the Trinidad and Tobago Air Guard on the south coast of Trinidad and in the Gulf of Paria, the Coast Guard stated there was no sighting of the missing vessel or the men.
According to the release, the Coast Guard continues to monitor the areas under national jurisdiction and has been liaising with Venezuelan authorities on the situation.
However, the Coast Guard reminded vessel owners and seafarers to ensure that they provide family members with accurate information such as their intended destination, vessel registration number, description of vessel hull and engines, as well as scheduled return time as this information is vital in cases of emergency and can aid the Coast Guard in successfully conducting Search and Rescue operations.
Meanwhile, the families of fishermen Vijayanand Toophanie, Rishi Seelochan, and Zaid Alladin who left on a vessel with another man Arnold Ramkhelawan also have no word about their whereabouts.
In a press release two Sundays ago, the Coast Guard reported that it was assisting in a search and rescue operation involving a vessel transporting 25 people from Trinidad and Tobago to the Delta Region of Venezuela.
The release stated that initial searches by people in Venezuela led to the discovery of four bodies and one survivor.
However, 20 people remained unaccounted for at that time.
