A 25-year-old municipal police officer from Arima has been charged with murder after shooting a 32-year-old homeless man to death.
The incident occurred on March 22.
Reports indicate that the officer, identified as Josiah Diaz, of Mt Pleasant Road, was driving in a marked police vehicle along South Quay, near the Old Agostini Building, Port-of-Spain, around 6 pm, when the homeless man reportedly threw a stone that shattered the windscreen of the vehicle.
It is alleged that the officer stopped, came out of the car and shot the street dweller in his upper body.
The officer then reportedly dropped the wounded man off at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where he later died. Hospital officials informed the Homicide Bureau about the incident and the officer was detained by investigators.
Diaz will appear before a High Court Master today.
