While questions circulate over who is really in charge of the Congress of the People (COP) at present, the party says they are going through a transition period.
The statement came yesterday, after conflicting announcements from the party’s interim chairman Lonsdale Williams, who last week announced the return of COP’s former political leader Prakash Ramadhar as the new interim leader, before changing his tune on Sunday to say the executive had not yet met and decided on the matter.
In another release yesterday, the party said it was going through a process of transition and rebuilding.
The COP stated, “The interim political leader of the Congress of the People takes note of the reports being carried in the media regarding a press release by the acting interim chairman of the Congress of the People, and wishes to state that these matters are being treated internally, and are part of the transition and rebuilding process and in due time, a full statement would be issued on these and other matters.”
Last Thursday, however, COP announced Ramadhar’s return to the helm and said he had replaced Kirt Sinnette, who resigned from the position of interim political leader after appointing Ramadhar as his deputy and then new interim leader.
The party also announced it was part of the Progressive Alliance (PA), which includes Gary Griffith’s National Transformation Alliance (NTA) and Timothy Hamel-Smith’s HOPE.
Then 72 hours later, Williams issued another release contradicting his initial announcement, this time saying no interim political leader was chosen.
Guardian Media sought further explanation from Ramadhar but he did not divulge any more details.
However, Sinnette remains adamant that Ramadhar was in charge although the party’s national executive did not sanction the change in leadership.
Ramadhar served as COP’s political leader from 2011 to 2016.
