RHONDOR DOWLAT
Three officers from the Central Division remain in custody as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged kidnapping for ransom of a used car dealer from Cunupia.
The arrests, made by officers from the Professional Standards Bureau and the Anti-Kidnapping Unit yesterday, came after a police vehicle suspected of being involved in the crime was impounded the day before.
Two of the three officers in question are from the Caroni Police Station. One out of the three officers is currently assisting investigators in locating the missing victim, Sachel Kungebeharry.
According to police sources, Kungebeharry was allegedly abducted on September 25, when the car he was travelling in was stopped by a marked police vehicle with flashing blue lights at 5 pm. Three men, two dressed in tactical police uniforms, forced Kungebeharry into the police vehicle, while two others accompanying him were left unharmed.
It is alleged that a ransom of $500,000 was paid for Kungebeharry’s release on September 29, but he remains missing.
Police officers within the Central Division have remained tight-lipped over the incident. However, other officers have expressed concern over the allegations, saying if it is true, more damage will be done to the TTPS in terms of public trust.
Police sources close to the investigation said investigating officers are working feverishly to locate the businessman and confirmed that “investigators are working on several leads which may result in a further breakthrough soon.”
When contacted on the issue yesterday, Police Complaints Authority head David West said they would investigate the matter but they first have to get the facts.
