Cops release Carapo Imam

An imam was ar­rest­ed last week­end in re­la­tion to the kid­nap­ping and as­sault of a Princes Town man has been re­leased from po­lice cus­tody.

Cara­po Ja­maat leader Has­san Ali was re­leased short­ly af­ter 4 pm Mon­day his at­tor­ney Fa­reed Ali con­firmed.

Ali, who is the fa­ther of Ra­jaee Ali, who is cur­rent­ly be­for the court in con­nec­tion with the mur­der of Dana See­ta­hal SC, re­turned to his home in Mal­abar af­ter be­ing re­leased by the po­lice.

Ali, along with six oth­ers, were ar­rest­ed at the Cara­po mosque last Sat­ur­day fol­low­ing an al­leged kid­nap­ping, as­sault and rob­bery al­le­ga­tion made by the vic­tim last Wednes­day.

In that in­ci­dent, a Princes Town man went to the Cara­po mosque to meet some­one, when he was con­front­ed, beat­en, placed in a ve­hi­cle and sub­se­quent­ly left in the O’meara In­dus­tri­al Es­tate. The keys to the man's car were al­so tak­en dur­ing the in­ci­dent.

While Ali and two oth­ers were re­leased, three oth­er mem­bers of the Ja­maat, aged 33, 36 and 41, re­main in po­lice cus­tody, Ali con­firmed. They are ex­pect­ed to face iden­ti­fi­ca­tion pa­rades.

Ali main­tains that his clients know noth­ing of the al­le­ga­tions the po­lice have claimed they al­leged­ly com­mit­ted.
