Police have yet to determine whether a vehicular accident on Rushworth Street, San Fernando, and the gun attack that claimed the life of Monica Ghany and left her son Matthew wounded are connected.
Matthew, 20, remains in stable condition at the San Fernando General Hospital (SFGH), recovering from a gunshot wound to his right hand. Investigators have not yet obtained a statement from him, but they intend to question him about the crash once he can provide details. Preliminary information suggests that his car was one of two vehicles involved in the accident on Christmas Eve. Matthew was reportedly taken to the hospital for treatment later that evening.
However, tragedy struck just on Friday as Ghany, wife of businessman Steve Ghany, and their son Matthew left the hospital around 2 pm. Police said as they drove along Lady Hailes Avenue near the new San Fernando Market construction site, their Nissan Tiida sedan was ambushed by gunmen travelling in a vehicle in the opposite direction.
The attackers opened fire, riddling the car with bullets before speeding away. Monica died at the scene, while Matthew was taken to hospital for emergency care.
This attack occurred hours after the murder of a man known to residents as Bam. Bam was gunned down during a confrontation on Thursday night. Both incidents took place just a short distance from the San Fernando Municipal Police Station, located on Lady Hailes Avenue, heightening concerns about the brazen nature of the violence.
Investigators are yet to ascertain the Bam's identity and are yet to detain any suspects in both murders.
