As T&T’s COVID-19 infections surged earlier this year, County Caroni was identified among those with the highest number of new infections. And while the country’s overall number of active cases have continued to fall, Caroni has remained a worrying concern for officials, as it is still is among those with the highest number of new infections.

During the Ministry of Health’s media briefing yesterday, Epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds said in most of the counties, a downward trend had been observed during weeks 21 to 23, with the exception of counties Caroni, Nariva/Mayaro and St Patrick.

The ministry’s geographic information systems manager, Roshan Seeramsingh, said data showed that within County Caroni, there were areas that are recording decreasing cases, while others are experiencing increases. He attributed this to household transmission.

“We have seen in the past, spread taking place in the home and of course looking at a smaller geographic area, there is a chance that such spread is influencing these outcomes.”
