The political leader of the PNM Tobago Council, Ancil Dennis described yesterday as a promising moment for the party as people filed nominations for 12 of the 17 positions up for renewal in the internal executive election.
Minutes before the nomination process came to an end, Dennis noted there was a significant increase in interest from Tobagonians vying for leadership roles in the council.
He said, “The interest is greater than in 2022 and that to me is a positive signal for us. It demonstrates that people are now willing to step forward, notwithstanding the fear and victimisation that is around. People are realising that time is counting down.”
The Tobago House of Assembly election is constitutionally due before the end of March 2026.
Dennis said a number of the open positions have several nominees vying in the election carded for April 27 and 28.
The 12 positions include Assistant General Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer.
Five other positions—inclusive of the political leader and chairman, vice chairman and lady vice chairman—will not be contested.
As a result, Dennis remains head of the executive.
According to the PNM constitution, there are some positions elected every four years and then there are others that are up for elections every two years.
The last internal election was held in March 2022 and so elections for these 12 positions are due.
The council said active participation in the elections is encouraged to shape the council’s leadership and direction.
