While she still doubts the accuracy of the DNA results, the mother of Danette Pierre says it would take a “sick evil bastard” to murder her daughter in that manner.
Trying to hold back the tears during an interview at her Ste Madeleine home yesterday, Pierre, 63, seemed confused whether or not to accept the results of the DNA test which was done locally.
On Wednesday, the police broke the horrific news to Pierre at her home that DNA samples taken from her and Danette’s father were a positive match to the charred remains found in Claxton Bay on the same night Danette went missing.
Danette, 31, hustled out of her home around 8.30 pm on January 28 after receiving a phone call.
She left her children, ages 13, seven and 23 months old, in the care of her mother. She told her mother she was “making a turn” but would be back soon.
An hour later, police were alerted about a car on fire at Cedar Hill Road. They found a badly burnt body inside.
Pierre reported Danette—the youngest of her five children—missing the following day.
While DNA samples were taken from them on February 6, Pierre said the police only told her they were keeping the samples on file.
She said, “It was never disclosed to me that they were going to test that.”
Reiterating that she is contemplating having another test done, not locally, but abroad, she said, “When I was given that news, I say you all sure. Within me I feel like I need a second opinion. I asked (the police) what is the procedure in going about to get a second opinion. One minute it (results) taking three months, next minute you take less than two weeks to get this results.”
Meanwhile, she said Danette’s father and sister went to the Forensic Science Centre yesterday to arrange to have the remains moved to a funeral home.
Noting that Danette’s birthday is on March 9, she said she would have something to honour her on that day, but she has not decided on the details.
She said, “My children need closure. That’s their baby sister. I am not willing to accept that closure so fast because somewhere along the line something is not in place. Something not feeling right.”
Lamenting that she has been left with many questions, she said she was clueless as to who would want to harm her daughter.
“Who? Why? Only God alone knows. I have answers for that. I have no idea. What could be so wrong that you will take a mother away from her three children?” she questioned.
She believes that when her daughter left home she thought she would have been able to handle the situation.
“I think she thought whatever it is she may be able to talk it out...She went and she did come back,” she said.
Pierre advised people, particularly young women, facing difficulties to confide in their parents.
“Maybe her (Danette) friends knew something was amiss but mummy was oblivious to what was going on. I don’t know. It’s hard for me to accept that a human being could hurt another human being in that way. You are not a human. You have to be a beast.”
Up to yesterday afternoon, no one was held for questioning in connection with her death.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 are investigating.
