An explosion at a T&TEC substation along the Eastern Main Road in Port-of-Spain caused a blackout in the capital on Tuesday night.
According to reports, a transformer at the substation near the Port-of-Spain Abbatoir exploded just before 7 pm.
This triggered islandwide power dips across Trinidad and the electricity supply for customers supplied from the substation was interrupted.
Several parts of Port-of-Spain were thrown into darkness and the fire could be seen from miles away as firefighters and T&TEC officials tried to address the problem.
Earlier in the day, an electrical fire at the T&TEC Master Substation, located along Park Avenue in Port-of-Spain, near the PowerGen plant, also caused a blackout in the capital between 11.15 am and 1.15 pm. Firefighters from the Wrightson Road Fire Station responded to that fire.
The fire was eventually brought under control and power was restored later in the night.
