As fish prices continue to skyrocket across T&T ahead of Easter season, one privately run fish market in Couva is keeping prices down as low as $5 per pound.
Kiran Santira, spokesman for Jody Bhowla’s fish market at Union Village said the facility was set up in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that consumers get affordable food.
Santira said, “Eat little and live long, that is the mantra of our management. We try hard and we try our best to sell at a reasonable price”.
He said the facility tries to maintain a standard price regardless of whatever time of the year it is.
Santira said he does not foresee any increase in prices for the Easter weekend. He said the vision of management was to ensure that food is made available since consumers are dealing with an increased cost of living.
Customer George Ramparas said he used to shop at the nearby Orange Valley fish market. However, at Orange Valley, fish is not available all the time, and consumers have to pay a $10 entrance fee to get into the Orange Valley Fish Market. Ramparas said he has been a loyal customer since the inception, “A poor man could afford this and rich man could come and get any amount of fish he wants".
The facility opens daily from 8am to 5 pm.
