A routine garbage collection early on Wednesday morning resulted in a grisly discovery as in Maraval.

Police said garbage men from the Amalgamated Sanitation Services were collecting garbage on Saddle Road, at the corner of Bowen Street, at around 6 am when they found a garbage bag containing the body of a baby girl.

Maraval police were called in with a district medical officer who declared the child dead.

Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region I are continuing enquiries.

Investigators said the child appeared to be a newborn with placenta still in the bag.

Guardian Media visited the neighbourhood on Wednesday morning after the child's body was removed and spoke with residents who said the community was shaken and unnerved by the discovery.

Longtime Maraval resident and shopkeeper, Neil Rodriguez, told Guardian Media that in his years living in the neighbourhood he never heard such about something as grim happening.

"It's not a nice thing at all.

"I'm a father myself and seeing something like this really hurts me."

Another resident who asked not to be named said the garbage bag was at the top of the pile which suggests that the body was discarded relatively recently.
